Nocturnal is a two-movement work for orchestra that evokes the happenings of night. Serene melodies and sounds of mischief appear in the first movement. These elements alternate, building towards a grand climax. As the climax dissipates, the harmonies shift to a darker color, signaling the arrival of nightfall.

In the second movement, chattering night sounds gradually become depraved, evolving into a wild and relentless dance whose ruthless pulse seems to extend the boundaries of night beyond the break of dawn.
